Jacob's Work

I used these colours and layout as the visual impact would be very good. I wanted some panels to go together when folded out and used some shading to create very 3D standing out visuals that make it look interesting. The colours, tones and shapes relate to the genre of music in our music video as there is a lot of strong colours and lines that reflect the strong, plain beats of the music.

Font Ideas

I think these fonts suit our genre. The last one especially, is hard for people to read and if they look at it for too long it confuses their eyes and our genre aims to mess with peoples heads. They are all linked to computers and technology with the strong lines, but also different in some way, such as the third one being fractured

My Digipak

This is my first draft of a digipak. for our final product, Jacob, James and I will combine our ideas onto one product

Digipak covers

A digipak is a pack that holds a CD; made of cardboard and sometimes use plastic to hold the CD. It is designed like a booklet that folds out. Most digipaks have 6 sides with either artwork or photos on each panel.

An effective digipak has the same theme running throughout, following a colour theme that is strong and contrasting; to make them stand out on a shop shelf. Digipaks shouldn't be too overwhelming for the consumer.

Big Beat Poster 2010

These are posters for a Big Beat Reunion concert. This has given us a recent insight of how Big Beat posters look. This will be useful for our production of a music poster in the genre of Big Beat. The song we have chosen; Galvanize; fits into this genre.

Location Research

These pictures would be imported to the green screen, possibly on a slideshow while the performers lip sync in front.

Song Details

"Galvanize" is a song by British electronic duo The Chemical Brothers and the first single released from their 2005 album Push the Button. It was released a week before the album's release and peaked at #3 in the UK charts. The genre is Big Beat. We have chosen this song because it is more familiar to us but still a challenge to take us out of our comfort zones.

Images

Before half term, Jacob said he was going to go to the sea and take some pictures and videos that we could use.
Today we looked through various location shots and clips that Jacob took. We chose ones that we thought would look good to use as a background while lip syncing in front of a green screen as well as still images that we could use as transitions shots.

Letter to Astral Works

Big Beat

The Chemical Brothers are the UK-based Grammy Award winning electronic music and rave duo of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons. Along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and The Crystal Method, as well as other lesser-known acts they were pioneers of the big beat electronic dance genre, and are known for high-quality live sets.

Their first album 'Exit Planet Dust' was released in 1995, along with a name change of the band - from The Dust Brothers, too the Chemical Brothers. They have 6 albums overall, with a new one coming out next year called 'Further'

This is a list of the current albums from 'The Chemical Brothers'.

Last Lesson

Last lesson we made the decision to change our song. We are keeping the same genre which means we don't have to redo everything. We are currently focussed on doing 'Galvanize' by Chemical Brothers. We began annotating the lyrics and thinking of ideas for a storyboard. We planned to go to various locations to research how well they could be used. We are going to;

Portsmouth - Spinnaker Tower

Wittering - Beach

Bracklesham Bay

and we think that London will be a good location.
We decided to do this as we became aware that some events of our genre often take place on the beach

Our Final Cut Lesson

This is 'Final Cut' which we will use when we make our music video. It has many useful tools; such as being able to use a green screen, having 2 videos playing simultaneously so you can cut between shots without losing continuity.

Photo/Shop Analysis

Photoshopped Image - I am pleased with the background I used. I found it by accident when learning different tools and decided it suits my genre well. I used a Parent Advisory sticker as many of the themes in "Drum n Bass" are not suitable for younger audiences. The Font I used works well with the technical element of "Drum n Bass".

Original Image 1 - This photo is a midshot eye level shot of Jacob to give the audience a personal effect that makes them feel as though they are standing with him. The pose Jacob is in connotes a pop artist; however, the clothing, being black, with the green bush shows more elements of "Drum n Bass".

Original Image 2 -We used the white background in this image so it would be easier to crop us out and put us on a different background in Photoshop. We used a long shot to show all 3 of us and the keyboard and mixer. The clothing suits the "Drum n Bass" genre as it is dark. Covering our eyes with our long hair shows a

Alternative Video Analysis

Cee Lo Green

  • Shows a narrative in segments of the characters life.
  • Set in four main locations.
  • Lip sync throughout, even from people playing the character, as well as the singer.
  • Good use of colours and effects. Helps the audience see who the main character is whenever the scenery changes.
  • Clear theme throughout the video of a man’s story and love life.
  • Lots of mid-shots to show action as well as lip syncing.
  • Eye contact with audience apart from when he is wearing sunglasses.
  • The singer is dressed to how the character should dress instead of seperate from the video.

JANELLE MONAE - COLD WAR

· Close-up to clearly show lip syncing and facial expressions to help convey strong emotions.

· Black background to emphasise the singer.

· Very strong eye contact with minimal blinking. Moves head but still retains eye contact.

· Screen fades in and out focus in time with the music.

· She fluffs a line, shakes her head with frustration, and a single tear rolls down. The lip-sync illusion is shattered.

· Camera is held freehand throughout.

Song Details

We have chosen Sub Focus - Spash ft. Coco as our song. It is in the Drum & Bass genre. We chose this song because it fitted the criteria. None of us had heard this song before so we weren't subject to bias and could approach it professionally. We also chose this as it had lyrics, unlike a lot of Drum & Bass, and had a female singer.

Roles

Todd - I will be in charge of filming the music video and bringing the story board to life as much as possible, gathering props we may need and helping in editing. I wll also help create the album cover and magazine advert in photoshop.

James - James will also help film and make sure the frame on camera resembles the storyboard as closely as posible. He will be in charge of editing and will help gather props. He will be in charge of bringing Jacob's designs to phtoshop.

Jacob - Jacob will also help film and edit. He will be in charge of designing our album cover and magazine advert. He will be in charge of Storyboarding and framing shots. He will be in charge of where in the location that he wants us to film.

Lauren - Lauren doesn't do media; however she has agreed to be in our music video and perform.

Initial Ideas

Our initial thoughts were to have a female artist be our performer to a Drum & Bass song. Our first tsong that we chose to do was Sub Focus - Splash ft. Coco with Lauren Goldsack as the singer. An initial location we had in mind was Boxhill with the scenery behind and changes in scenery without having to travel too far. We think that some lyrics will fit in with Boxhill's scenery and atmosphere; the chorus would be a good section to keep coming back to here.
One prop idea was to have a giant Chubba Chups lolly, to be used to show abstract or a prop during performance. To gather our ideas we had a group discussion just suggesting ideas and see how the group responded. We chose the Drum & Bass genre purely because we thought that not many other people would choose the same and we wanted to challenge ourselves and take ourselves out of our comfort zones. When Designing our CD cover, we decided to advertise an offer of being able to download something for free if you buy it, to help encourage people to buy a CD as most would rather download it.

Audience Analysis Evaluation

From our results, we have decided to aim our music video towards White British males around the age of 16-20. Our music video will mainly be narrative with cuts to performance. We will make sure our video is child friendly so music channels are able to broadcast it at appropriate times such as when our age range gets home from school/college/work. When advertising our music video, we will emphasise the ability to buy online and download it as few people in our questionnaire go to shops to buy music. Drum & Bass was the favourite genre of the people we questionned, so our song and video will be Drum & Bass.

CD Analysis - Jacob Roots'

There are many different energetic lines and designs coming from the CD cover. It has very vivid colours and the energy relates to the style and the speed of drum and bass music.
There is slight humour in the top right text showing that this music is top. There are many volume speaker symbols with the volume up which shows that the music is loud and in your face all the time. On many drum and bass CD covers, there are interesting graphics showing the energy of the music.

Ram Records

Ram Records is an English drum and bass record label founded by Andy C and Shimon in 1992.

The progressive off-shoot of Drum and Bass began to emerge and the Ram Trilogy pioneered a new sound changing the direction of the scene once again.

Ram Records is arguably the biggest and best drum & bass label of all time. Their residency at The End is more than just an institution; it defines drum & bass clubbing!

Andy C seems to be one of their more popular artists and he also founded Ram Records with Anthony Miles.

Andy Clarke began experimenting with programming breaks as a teenager; he met Ant Miles at the studios where he was working through a family connection. They began working together in Ant's converted garage studio where Andy nurtured what was to become a sublime talent for chopping up and re-programming breaks. Andy then decided to set up his own label in early 1992 with a budget of £1000. RAM - so named due to Andy's star sign, Aries - launched with his solo debut and now-highly-collectable 'Sour Mash EP'.

Drum and Bass as a whole is dominated by a small group of "hardcore" record labels. These are run mainly by some of the scene's most prominent DJ–producers, such as Roni Size's Full Cycle Records, London Elektricity's Hospital Records, Andy C’s Ram, Goldie’s Metalheadz, Dj Fresh’s Breakbeat Kaos and DJ Hype, Pascal and DJ Zinc’s True Playaz

Lyrics Annotation for Video Ideas

Low Budget music Video's

Ways of making a good video without amazing equipment.

Fig Rig: made by Mike Figgis
- Cheaper way of keeping camera steady.
- Small, Comfortable.
- Good for tracking or craning, crab.

Lighting:
- Torches; good for low key.
- Sun; high key.
- White board, sheet; tinfoil on board.
- Desk lamp.

Mise en Scene:
- Framing shot.
- Leave unwanted background out.
- Green screen.
- Outside school.

Slo-mo:
- Can walk in slow motion but lip sync in time.
- Need a sped up track.
- Lip sync the sped up track while walking normally; then slow it down.

Here, only very simple effects are used. Any effect that might look very cheap should not be used.
In a music video of this genre, a good effect to make it look more expensive is by using a black and white effect and even make it look LESS clear as a video shot by a cheap camera will make the footage, by itself, look quite cheap.
Adding effects that shake the screen will make the video correspond to the music being played.

Theories - Bordwell and Thompson

4 Catagories of film editing.

- Based on Mise en Scene.
- Thinking about the pictorial qualities within a video.

Patterns, light and dark, colour similarities and differences.
Can be used to create 'smooth continuity' or abrupt contrast.
Graphics match; shots link together by graphic similarities.
e.g. Psycho; in the shower, cuts from plug hole to eye.

Graphic continuity; point of interest remaining constant throughout cuts, maintaining a colour theme, same lighting levels, avoiding strong colour clashes.
Graphic discontinuing; opposite to above.

Rhythmic:

Editing the footage and thinking about the duration of each shot.
Rhythmic editing will show that each shot runs on length according to the beat and tempo of the music.
Different shots will give you difference effects;
- All shots the same length; steady metrical beat.
- Shots get shorter and shorter; tension.
- Longer shots; calm.
- Shorter shots; chaos.

- Spatial:

Basically; maintaining continuity through thinking about the space where the events of the music video takes place.
Continuity - using an establishing shot to show viewers where the event is taking place; followed by midshots.
The 'Kuleshot Effect' - no establishing shot; but still giving the audience the impression that everything is taking place in one location. We see portions of the shot and we fill in the rest. There's a relationship between the different shots. This is called a 'connection relationship'.
Cross cutting - 2 things happening at the same time in 2 different places; cuts between.

- Temporal; continuity.
Based on the time frame that the action is taking place; and how the footage manipulates time.
Order - The order of events can be manipulated, eg flashbacks.
Duration - The events that take place in the story can be altered through use of ellipses.
Screen time less than reality.

- Frequency; in continuity editing; and event happening lends to only occur once. If the event is repeated it can become a powerful way of building tension and audience expectation.

Theories - Andrew Goodwin

Dancing in the Distraction Factory

He talked about 3 types of videos that use set conventions:

1) Illustrations - Videos that show lyrics.

Music:
- Always Cuts on beat.

Lyrics:
- Images show the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics. Often just with singing and dancing.
e.g. Alicia Keys; she's on stairs, showing that she is backed into a corner.

Band Image:
- Band shown as a band; dressed how you would expect.
Michael Jackson; In Thriller he is dressed as the lead character and is at the front of dancing.

2) Amplification - amplifies the lyrics.

Music:
- Cut on beat most of the time; but cuts off beat to emphasise features.
e.g. Pixie Lott - Turn it up; when the music gets slower at the bridge.
Lyrics:
- Images amplify the lyrics.
- Narrative may be used to show what lyrics alone can't.

Band image:
- Band takes on fictional roles in the narrative.
e.g. Lady Gaga - Telephone;

3) Disjuncture:

Music:
- Cut off beat
- Sometimes the sign of a bad music video

Lyrics:
- Images that do not relate to the lyrics are used.
- Sometimes used by a band that is already well known and established
- They can afford to take the risk.

Band image:
- Band takes on an image that is nothing like the expected image.
- New band; can't take risk; can't break an image that hasn't been made; would just look like a bad video; need an image that will make money.
e.g. Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire; the video is very abstract as it doesn't follow any concept.
